I am going to reinforce the roof truss on our vacation home and need to choose between using a glulam (42x180) or a standard beam (45x220). Can anyone give an opinion on which is better? In terms of cost, the beam has the advantage.

The usual rule is best (stiffer). The difference in modulus of elasticity (glulam better) does not compensate for the difference in height.
