Hello, what do you think about the construction of gate posts illustrated in the picture? My craftsman has made them.
The first ones he made were so wobbly that they swayed in the wind, so now they should be more robust! He placed a post base into an existing huge concrete block that he had previously cast there, then he put a wooden post into the post base and then screwed on three panel boards on the outside. After doing that, he stuffed a lot of expanding grout into the big hole under the post base. Then he screwed on the last board.
Shouldn't the grout absorb water into the boards causing them to rot?

Wood directly against concrete is, as we know, a disastrous solution - the wood rots after a few years. An additional tip you can do is to cast a concrete beam so that the post foundations are connected to each other underground - then there's no chance of the posts moving or leaning - you can even hang the largest and heaviest wrought iron gates without the posts starting to lean inward.
I have myself cast two fairly large gate posts on foundations that are connected with a concrete beam, for our driveway. Even though I don't have any gates hanging on the posts now... but the possibility is there to do so - regardless of what the gates will weigh.
