Is it even reasonable to consider converting it, cost-wise? Of course, we could get a standalone cottage, but since we have a "shell" to spare, we want to explore the possibility. Can anyone provide an estimate of the cost for this? If we let a company do the heavy work and then paint, lay flooring, and so on ourselves. We will, of course, request a quote, but I am of the impatient sort and can't wait...

You need to apply for planning permission for the change of use from an outbuilding to a residential building.
