My wife and I intend to build a detached carport with space for 2 cars.
We do not want posts between the cars.
After searching online for kits and/or plans, we are stuck due to the calculation of snow load.
We live in Gävle with snow load zone 2.5 but would prefer snow load zone 3.
Is there anyone here who has any suggestions/solutions to our dilemma?
Best regards, Janne

Here's a good place to get calculations. They were used for my building permit for a conservatory.

It is doubtful whether the carport as you have designed it is sufficiently laterally stable. Ideally, you should have proper diagonals on three of the sides. Alternatively, the two inner corners can be designed as shorter walls at an angle and the two outer ones stabilized with a diagonal in the plane of the roof. I don't understand in what way the snow load is a problem other than that it requires rather strong beams?
Hello.
Thank you for all the answers.
We have not yet tried the link for calculations.
But when we have previously searched online, we have found kits (as the attached image shows).
It says that it holds, for example, snow load 0.9, which then becomes too weak.
So the question is what dimensioning is needed where there is a risk of a lot of snow?
Lateral load? Braces? Did not know that this also needs to be included in the construction?
Much to consider and think about.
Not entirely simple for us who are not designers.
Best regards,
Janne

Such a low snow load on this type of construction only occurs along the Øresund in Skåne. An old-fashioned carpenter might be able to make this type of construction stable, but not everyone else who relies on different types of fittings. What are the dimensions of the roof, and what roofing material is used?
The carport in the picture is a kit, only the wood material is included, then it is up to the buyer to choose the roofing material.
Would a storage room at the short end brace the carport so that the need for lateral load is met?
Best regards,
Janne

Absolutely! A storage at the short end combined with a diagonal in the roof's plane should be enough to stabilize. The difference in dimensions of the load-bearing parts in a carport built for the west coast of Skåne compared to the Gävle area is very large. It cannot be the same kit.
