Removed a switch and its box so now the hole remains in the wall.
What would be the best among these options:
1. Put a board on the backside and then fill in the rest with putty.
2. Put a board, cut out a round disc and place it in the hole against the back board, which would require significantly less putty.
Then I'm considering how to fasten everything, glue or screw? (9.2mm masonite)

Well, then I wasn't so dumb after all when I started step 2 already yesterday by taking the hole saw and arranging a round disc. 
But this thing with mounting adhesive, can you really rely on its durability? Not fun if it comes loose.
