I have a brick chimney that is now (since the oil burner was replaced by a geothermal heat pump) usually cold.
It has, mainly on one side, started to lose pieces from the bricks, and I assume it is moisture infiltration followed by frost that has caused this (?).
Therefore, I am considering whether "facade protection" like one of these can prevent this:

I have also seen several other manufacturers, including Beckers, and most seem similar.

So to the actual question.
For several of the options, it mentions the strength of the bricks, and that if they are not of sufficiently good quality, this treatment might cause frost explosion rather than prevent it.

Does anyone here know anything about this and have anything to say?
Experiences with different brands?

Grateful for tips and opinions.
