Will likely need to place a glulam beam in the roof ridge. Approx. 90x400

gable to gable is 6.4 meters.

glulam is "affordable" up to 6 meters

I'm pondering a bit...

it will rest on posts with intended dimensions 90x145 (2x 45x145)

about 5 cm is missing on each side for the glulam to reach the post.

if I use 90x195 (2x 45x195) as posts, the glulam beam will just reach the edge of the post.

I know you can custom order longer glulam.

but what do you think about placing a piece of lumber under the glulam and extend it by 20 cm on each end?

and then nail together with plywood on each side, like the sketch I've made.

since the extension will be right at the support, the stress should be minimal, I feel.

Visit a reputable builders' merchant and place an order, there won't be much difference.
 
Just because the extension is right at the setup, the strain is greatest there. I think it's an extremely short-sighted idea.

Sure, the strain becomes greatest there... but in my mind, it's like trying to compress the wood where the load becomes large.

I thought my idea was so good :D

Sure, but I need to extend about half of the height of the glulam...
 
I do have an alternative here in another thread... and that is to go to the woods and cut down a spruce that is 6.4 meters long.

that saves me about 5000:- per beam...

but it seems to be difficult with strength calculations on logs... despite them being used for large structures for thousands of years.

doesn't the castle have a span of about 15 meters with logs?
edit: the castle apparently had spans of up to 31 meters at the longest...
