Went to the hardware store today to buy concrete to cast a floor where we will then build a foundation for a wood stove, etc. on top, and we also want raw concrete with no coating at all in front of the stove foundation. The seller convinced me to buy EPS concrete because it would be light, strong, etc. but now when I read on their website, it says that EPS is usually supposed to be coated with a leveling compound or similar on top.

Is it not possible to have EPS without anything on top? What happens then?

It is far too porous, it will crumble apart.

Darn, then I have to go and exchange

By the way, is it possible to cast regular fine concrete on top?

We have done as you described with a casting under the foundation for a wood stove and about 40 cm in front as a hearth. First, we cast about 15-20 cm of EPS for some insulating effect, on top of this a layer of about 4-5 cm with regular coarse concrete which became the visible surface and base for the foundation.

Yes, that will be fine.
