Can anyone tell me how to frame next to a chimney stack? We are renovating a house built in the 30s that previously had wooden studs and wooden kitchen cabinets screwed directly to the chimney. Tiled stoves, etc., that have been connected to the chimney's flue channels were approved and used until we began renovating. We now want to frame the same wall next to the chimney and put up new kitchen cabinets, but what do the regulations say? Now that we're redoing it, we've considered using metal studs for fire safety reasons but are still not quite sure how to do it. It likely requires OSB to be able to screw up kitchen cabinets again. The question is if we can screw OSB and plasterboard into the metal studs even though the OSB board will only be about 50 mm from the chimney? Or well, the question might be how do we do it at all? Can we even mount kitchen cabinets to the chimney as we intended (it is required for us to make room in the kitchen), or do we have to choose between being able to use the tiled stoves or enclosing the chimney? Obviously, the previous solution worked for many years, which leads us to believe that maybe the flue channels are configured in a way that allows wood to be attached directly to the chimney. Is there someone knowledgeable or who has had the same problem?
