Hi, I'm planning to cast a slab 60cm above the existing ground level. I have seen solutions where a footing is cast, built up with Leca blocks, and the gap filled with backfill material. What do you think of this solution instead? Are there any risks with this construction? The building on top will be a glass-enclosed conservatory. The ground consists of clay. We are in need of a similar solution to a problem where one corner of our extension needs to be about 90cm above the ground.

We have discussed some solutions with a construction company, and what we will probably do is use ALBA beams (lightweight aggregate beams) in 2 layers that are mortared together. That is, 400+600mm high beams that are then plastered together. They have done this on a house quite recently, which connects to an old crawl space foundation, similar to ours. We will go and check the result of this.

I sketched quickly how I thought, if I understood him correctly. I will come back with how we will proceed.

Quite frankly, one could probably do something similar with regular lightweight aggregate blocks as well, which can be mortared up to a suitable level, but this will probably go much faster.
