Hello,
I have long noticed how bad the joints have been on our chimney. Today, I climbed up to start cleaning out the joints to then repoint them. Then I discovered that in some places it was not only the joint that was loose but also the mortar between the stones, and some stones were a bit loose. My plan now is to clear out as much as possible where it is loose (maybe up to half the depth of the stone) and still let the stones remain in place and then press in new mortar and repoint. That sounds sufficient, right (the stones have so far stayed 100% in place despite being a bit loose)?
Another thing, to clean the joints, I thought of vacuuming or blowing with compressed air. Do the stones need to be cleaned further, for example, with diluted hydrochloric acid (does the brick withstand it?)?
Regards,
Mats
