Hello!

I'm pondering something, and I hope to get some input from the forum.

I've bought a 32-inch TV (weight 4.6 kg) that I want to mount on a foldable stand of this kind: https://www.jula.se/catalog/hem-och...-bild/vaggfasten-och-mobler/vaggfaste-929084/

I know the ideal is to mount it on a stud, in our case metal, but I'm tempted to mount it directly on our single-layer drywall, simply to get it in the right place. Is that stupid? Will it hold? Or should I stick to the stud? The bracket against the wall has quite a small area, which makes me wonder, about 6 x 26 cm.

What say you?
Kind regards,
Anders

Forget about mounting it on a simple plaster wall, then there must be a wooden board of about 600X600X13 and about 3 fastenings per side that grip the wall.

Oh well... Of course... I kind of expected that answer. Had a discussion at work where two "guys" thought it should be enough. Hence the question, really. But as you say, it will probably need a board to strengthen and distribute the forces. However, I think I'll dare to use a smaller board, the TV is ridiculously light.

Thanks for the answer

Why not try with decent Molly? If it starts to give, take it down and put a plate over the damage and mount it back. I think it can hold in the plaster for the light TV.

If you calculate a little...

5 kg on a 0.5 m lever arm becomes 2.5 Nm. The support against the wall seems to be about half as high as the lever arm, 0.25 m. So the pulling force is about 10 kg. Would you hang a 10 kg ceiling lamp with that mounting in a plasterboard?

(And regarding the tip to test. It's not just about filling and painting. You might also need to buy a new TV.)

More like 25 Nm. Now, it's not the same units but the ratio is, of course, on Earth 5kg = 50N.

Sorry, I meant dNm. ;)

Anyway, the result is the same.

Unfortunately, the stand also weighs quite a bit...

But what do you think about the solution of attaching a 10 mm plywood with 6-8 drywall anchors/Molly, and then attaching the stand to it? The board can be 40 x 50 or something similar. Could that work?

Thanks again for the response
Anders

According to Gyproc, single plasterboard can withstand 15 kg of tension with a Molly plug, and they probably have a safety margin on that figure. I believe that the stand can actually be mounted with a Molly plug provided there are no children in the family hanging on the stand.

You should keep an eye on it. Gypsum doesn't release in such a way that everything suddenly falls down. And a small TV doesn't cost that much these days. ;)

It is quite a small and light TV, so there are no problems mounting it with anchors in single drywall.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I haven't installed it yet but it's likely that I'll put up a plate as reinforcement, a little leeway against climbing kids :-)

Realized I could share a picture showing how it turned out. Bought a nail plate of decent size and first attached it with molly. Then I screwed the stand onto the plate and through the plasterboard. A total of 8 Molly, with the plate to distribute the load. Then my wife covered the ugly plate with fabric. Sturdy and good

Grainy picture, but there were intense protests if I fiddled too much

Thanks for the advice!

  • TV mount installation with fabric-covered metal plate secured to the wall using Molly bolts, a TV attached to the mount, a guitar on the wall, and a child on a sofa.

Has the same mount. I thought those plastic covers were ugly, so I threw them away.

There's something to that, they are not beautiful
