Watching "Drömkåken" on TV, and the guy supervising the participants was incredibly strict about them using drywall screws when installing the OSB boards. But why? As long as the screw pulls into the chipboard, I don't really see the problem... Can someone explain? I've always used drywall screws when installing OSB, and a quick Google search suggests some form of 50/50 acceptance to it?

Sure, with really porous studs, the stud might give way before the screw is countersunk into the OSB, but we always use pine studs and not porous spruce, so I've never had that problem. But is there something else too?

I can only speak from my own experience, and in that case, the gips screw hasn’t proven better in fastening the osbn tightly to the frame.
The board screw, on the other hand, has done a good job. I thought the gips screw tended to "freewheel" a bit too easily.

A bit of anecdotal evidence, but yeah...

The risk is that the screw head may break off when driving a plywood sheet into a wooden stud with a drywall screw.
However, I don't see it as a problem since the risk is small.
If they used drywall screws for metal studs, the screw might sometimes have trouble penetrating the sheet.

But if you're using metal studs, you must have chipboard screws with threads specifically for metal studs.

Edit: maybe the explanation became a bit confusing. I can understand if people have trouble choosing the right screw.

I think 40mm drywall screws have worked well for OSB, but you should preferably place the screw in the seam between two panels, otherwise the head can break off, at least with the noname screws I use.

Drywall screws are fully threaded. To drive the board against the substrate, it must 'freewheel' a few turns in the OSB without rotating in the stud. This requires more finesse, so to speak. Additionally, it's often difficult to drive the entire screw head down. Thus, there can be a thin air gap between the OSB and the drywall. Therefore, I vote for the chipboard screw. I usually use decking screws as they often have a drill point.

Additionally, the particle board screw is available with a torx head. This avoids having to force a Phillips head.

one should not use drywall screws for OSB, the right choice is chipboard screws.
