Hi!

We live in a house from the 50s-60s. In the basement, we have several rooms that we are planning to convert into rooms and a recreation room. Right now, some of the walls are plastered and some are tiled. The floor is covered with tiles.

We have considered installing drywall directly on the tiles (two craftsmen have said it's possible). But after a lot of googling, I have read that it will create moisture problems. Is that true? Do you need metal studs to create an air gap between the wall and the drywall? Or is it possible to have the drywall directly on the tiles?

On the floor, we are thinking of installing wall-to-wall carpet since the cost of installing underfloor heating was quite high.

Grateful for any answers! Those of you who have renovated a basement with the same conditions as ours, how have you approached it?

Whether or not using gypsum is appropriate depends on whether there's a risk of moisture entering through the walls. Considering that it was previously decided to paint or tile, it has likely been assessed that some moisture intrusion occurs. Moisture and the paper layer of a gypsum board are a combination that mold really likes.

Having living rooms with painted walls is not unusual.
