Drywall against irregular edge

I am going to attach a renovation drywall panel on top of a wavy stringer. How do you make sure to get the right shape for the drywall? I was thinking of buying a curve ruler to shape it according to the stringer and then use it as a template when cutting the drywall, but maybe there are other and better ways?

A piece of cardboard or similar that you can use as a template?

It might work. A bit fiddly, but I'll try!

Screw the board in place, rough saw most of it away first. Leave at least 5 cm towards the stringer. Then cut with a knife and snap as usual. Then bring out the surform and polish the details.
