Hello!

I have a drywall between the bedroom and living room (about 9 cm thick) that was installed by a previous owner, and my plan is to run a network cable from one room to the other.

I took a chance and started drilling above the molding but encountered what I believe is a steel beam about 2-3 cm in? On both sides of the wall, there are a couple of power outlets + a TV outlet, and unfortunately, I don't know how these wires are routed, so I'm a bit worried about drilling into something that carries electricity.

Here's what it looks like where I drilled:
Drilled hole in a wall above a baseboard, with visible plaster dust and a drill bit on the floor.

I also drilled a hole next to it to see what it looked like there:
Close-up of a drilled hole in a green plaster wall above a white baseboard, revealing wood and possible steel beams inside.

Do you have any tips on how I should proceed? Keep making holes until I (possibly) find the right spot, or should I take a chance and drill straight through?

Thanks in advance

Isn't it just steel studs then?

OSB and screws?

Oops, I wrote beam but meant stud!

Yes, that's what I'm suspecting, but then you start thinking about those electrical outlets. I have no idea what it usually looks like inside plaster walls.

I saw that there are stud finders, but they don't seem very reliable after reading around, at least not the budget version for 150 SEK hehe

I think it just looks like a screw because the drill has gone a few millimeters into the metal unfortunately 🙂

Check with a really strong magnet.
Then you should be able to see if it's the rule you've found.

Just a sheet metal rule, if you are going to continue drilling and pulling a cable through, be mindful of the sharp edges. If possible, it is best to first run a VP pipe or hose through the hole to prevent the metal edges from cutting/damaging the cable. Otherwise, you will need to move up a bit to above the floor.
