I have opened up two doors between the kitchen & living room. Do you put casings around them? I have no clue. Preferably I don't want to, but is it okay?
One of them will be tight against the wall regardless.

  • Open doorway between kitchen and living room with a tiled kitchen wall, oven, fan, and wooden planks on the floor.
  • An open doorway between a kitchen and living room with construction materials in the background; no door frame is visible.

You do as you please.

Doors are typically covered with foder because otherwise, you get a gap between the frame and the wall.

Door trim indoors is entirely for aesthetic purposes. When you install a door frame in a wall opening, it is an easy way to make it look nice by hiding the gap between the frame and the wall with trim. But there are other ways to do it too. And if you don't even have a door, just an opening, there's not even a gap to hide.

Ok thank you both! Then I'll most likely leave it as it is since one of them doesn't work anyway.

How did you choose to do it? Photos of the final result? :)
