It depends on the context. A wider trim needs more space around it not to look oversized. In our home, for example, we have both smaller rooms and lower ceilings in the attic floor, and therefore we plan to use moldings and trim of smaller dimensions there than in the entry floor.

With us, with 3 m ceiling height, fully French double doors, and turn-of-the-century woodwork, the smaller one would look completely out of place. As I said, it all depends on the room.
