Does the hollow brick wall support the joist?
Here's what it looks like in the recreation room

Now I'm going to take down the fireplace to access the chimney that's about 15 cm inside, but then I started wondering if the Mexitegel might be supporting the beam(s) that are cut against the chimney. What do you think?

I don't think so either, the beams are probably supported and rest on the heart wall, the bricks are probably just built up to the ceiling as a decoration and to enclose the fireplace or cassette.
