Hi, urgent question. I saw today that the painter filled a large defect in the door frame where a switch had been cut out with regular filler. Will this really hold over time? It will look very ugly if the piece cracks/falls off since there's no wallpaper behind it. My own idea was to buy a similar switch and place it there, but if this holds, it's obviously neater.

  • A doorframe with a large patched defect filled with spackle, where a switch was previously cut out. Loose wiring is visible beside the repair.
Hard to see, do you have a better picture?

  • A hand holding a light switch cover near exposed wires in a white textured wall, next to a red wall plug.
This is what it looked like before the spackling

Thinking of sanding so that it will look nicer of course

Glue on a piece of wood like quarter round, can it work?

I was considering that myself, but I have a bit of a time crunch before it needs to be wallpapered. So the question is whether spackle will hold. Defect that is about 60 mm long and 10 mm wide/deep.

It should probably hold. But there are better products, like chemical wood for the purpose.

Worked a bit with plastic padding filler, chemical metal, and house fix outdoors, and the problem with plastic padding products is that they harden quickly when you add hardener, and in this case, I think it's difficult to shape in time. I've had both plastic padding and house fix on outdoor fences, and they have come off after a few years. I think it might be different indoors, and that filler might work after all, if it doesn't crack after a few years.

That's not a place where there will be stress. It will hold.
