Hello,
I have an old house from 1923, with an extension from the mid-1950s. The extension has a flat metal roof on which we would like to build a wooden deck/patio. There is already a railing and a patio door leading out to the roof. But the metal roof gets quite hot to walk on during the summer.

Unfortunately, we don't have any construction drawings of the house. So now a few questions before the work begins:

1. Can you determine/assess the load-bearing capacity of the roof yourself, and if so, how? Or do we need to bring in a structural engineer to determine if the roof can support the weight of the wooden deck? What can they assess without tearing down the roof and walls?
2. Are there any good construction solutions for decks/patios on top of roofs available for download somewhere?
3. Other experiences to keep in mind?

Thank you very much in advance for all input.
