Do I need floor gypsum?

There is cardboard-free gypsum on the way, but it hasn't hit the market yet, as far as I know. But the products are ready, they just need to be produced. The cardboard has been replaced with fiberglass, and these boards will be much smoother than the fiber cement boards that are really the only alternative today.

That feels like a good product development, strange that no one thought of it years ago.
