Do I dare drill for a ceiling hook here?
We need to move our ceiling lamp. It seems to be a plaster ceiling and we want it to stay in place. Used a magnet and now I'm wondering if I dare to drill a hole where the magnet attaches, because in my world it should be the stud that the screw is in that the magnet attaches to. Knocked but can't hear any difference. Need help here. The lamp weighs around 3-4 kg and is one of these:

It is most likely spaced paneling at the short joints of your gypsum board in the ceiling... there it should hold to screw in a hook for a lamp...Poccas said:

I've searched with a magnet, and now I'm wondering if I dare to drill a hole where the magnet attaches because in my mind, it should be the support beam that the screw is in, which the magnet in turn attaches to.
I've tapped around but can't hear a difference.

Grateful for guidance so it's done right
If you have a drill, you can feel if there is wood under where you intend to attach it without making too large a hole...
Thanks, now nailed in a dyckert and there is panel there. Used the magnet on the side.Rejäl said:
Is it just drill and insert a screw, or is a plug needed?
If it's a hook with a wood thread, you don't need to drill, just screw it in where you want it, if it's very coarse you can drill a small 2-3mm hole to make screwing easier.Poccas said:
No plugs are used in the wood.
Instead of making holes in the ceiling (a shame), you can use a Långa Jan from Classes, then you can have the fixture almost anywhere to fit over a table.Poccas said:
Then you should pre-drill a 2 mm hole up, if you screw in a proper ceiling hook, it can expand in the hole. Apply glue to the thread before you screw it in. And remember to have a sturdy hook, one like this is good and holds up to 15 kilos, and is available in different lengths, although the different lengths might not be at Classes.Poccas said:

Thank you. Yes, I checked at Classes, but it feels flimsy. I need to look for a thicker and longer one. The lamp has been in the ceiling for 17 years on a regular ceiling hook, so it should hold.J jonaserik said:Then you should pre-drill a 2 mm hole up, if you use a proper ceiling hook it can expand in the hole. I need to move it because you hit your head 🤣
Lamp sockets with hooks hold up to 15 kilos, the type I linked to, virtually every electrician has in their cars and is used 100% for hooks in the ceiling.Poccas said:
