Demolishing a chimney in a 1940s wooden house?
Hello!
To plan the layout for a major renovation, we are considering demolishing the chimney. There are a few people here on the forum who have done this (MathiasS and others). It would be interesting to hear others' experiences with this task. Could it be about 10 man-days of work? The house is 2 stories plus a basement, but the chimney will remain in the basement as it's part of a heart wall. I would guess it's about 8 meters that need to be demolished, with 8-9 flues.

I have taken down my chimney. 9 flues or something like that. I can say this...
A lot of work and a lot of dust, but well worth the effort. Our floor plan became much better.
Now, I had a bit of a cheat. I had a wheel loader with a bucket that I placed on the entrance steps. Tipped the wheelbarrow into it. Filled a tractor trailer (holds about 8 cubic meters) 4 times.
I'm glad we weren't living in the house then, it creates an insane amount of dust.

How tall was it, and how long did it take?thewolf said:I have torn down my chimney. 9 flues or something like that. I can say this...

I'm glad we didn't live in the house then, it dusts like crazy.
2 floors plus attic. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it took a few days.
If I remember correctly, it didn't have a load-bearing function. But when we removed it in the basement, there was a ledge left, so we chipped up the entire basement floor and re-poured the whole slab. That wasn't the plan from the start. But in hindsight, it's nice to have underfloor heating in the entire basement.
I'll try to remember to upload some pictures... Unfortunately, all the pictures are at home, and when I'm home, I'm busy...
Right now, it's deck building. It's just a shame that the rain is pouring down, so tonight it will be rain gear on...
