We are in the process of renovating our apartment and one detail that would be fun is to install a so-called decorative fireplace that burns liquid fuel in a wall that divides two rooms. The wall extends about 2 meters at an angle with another wall, meaning the wall forms a T with another wall. The proposal we have received is to cut out a horizontal U-shape on the wall (viewed from above, it would be at the bottom of the T) and install the fireplace there with a stone slab at the bottom and glass around it. The height would be about 50 cm with a 10 cm air gap at the top.
However, I question the fire safety regarding this. Such a fireplace gets quite hot since there is an open flame, and in the "ceiling" of the fireplace (the top leg of the horizontal U), it is only a painted plasterboard. Admittedly, it is fire-rated gypsum board, but the paint should not be able to withstand that heat, I think. I would like comments on this and where one might turn for a professional assessment.
