Hello!

My parents have on their property in the countryside an outbuilding with a concrete slab built on what we believe is an old root cellar. Since their main house is quite small, they would like the option to convert the outbuilding into a guest house. However, we're not sure where to start. I like to read up on things ad absurdum, and my dad prefers to do things without thinking ahead ;) As you can see, some paneling has been replaced and a door added by someone who didn't really have a plan...

The previous owners also considered converting it but backed off because it was so damp. However, since we bought the property, we have removed a large pine tree and some other vegetation that shaded the house.

The age of the concrete slab is unknown, I only know it was there in '93 when the previous owners bought the house. Should we be worried about something like blue concrete or similar?

Can anyone recommend any suitable literature or have any tips on how we should proceed? I'm quite handy but not perfect. The budget is almost nonexistent (due to a roof replacement on the main house), so it's not really the time to start building, but we can at least prepare and plan.
