I am about to buy a house with an attached barn, and I have plans to furnish the upstairs (the loft) of the barn and make it livable. I understand that it's difficult to comment without having seen what the barn looks like, but is it realistic to think that it's enough to insulate the floor, walls, and roof? Or is there something else to consider?

Should the floor, for example, be reinforced? Right now, it's just a layer of planks.

The walls have narrow gaps (a few mm) between the planks. Do you need to improve the facade then, or could it be enough to place some paper or other boards between the insulation and the facade?

Is there any disadvantage to having a cold downstairs under an insulated and heated upstairs?

Whether the floor needs reinforcement is entirely up to you to decide; it depends on whether it gives way when you walk on it.

Otherwise, it's fine to insulate as you have planned, but you need an air gap directly inside the paneling and ceiling. It's fine to keep the façade as it is. There are no disadvantages to having uninsulated on the floor below.
