An hour to repair a deck floor. Obviously an amateur construction. The decking was laid without regard to the grain with happy faces here and there, causing it to bulge. This, combined with cheap deck screws that couldn't hold the decking against the beam, resulted in the deck screws snapping. Sigh. Hopefully, "real" deck screws will do the trick for now. A broken deck screw lying on a wooden deck, showing signs of inadequate installation and material choice in a DIY project.

Svenskträ says: Install the decking board with the best side facing up. If possible, the core side should be facing up.

I haven't bothered with the happy/sad face convention during the last few years of building decks, it doesn't matter with typical "svensson-trall." Just put the nicer side up and it will be fine.

The reason you have a lot of broken screws is that something other than stainless screws in A2/A4 quality was used. I also see they are screwed in a bit too far, which creates a moisture pocket that accelerates corrosion in corrosion-sensitive screws.

When you assemble the deck yourself, it usually means you drive the stainless screws neatly and flush with the surface. Then, the next year, when the wood has shrunk and settled, you have to go over the whole thing again and screw down the heads that have begun to stick up in the shrinking wood. Not a huge task but worth noting.

Dear blåtummr
It wasn't me who botched the deck construction.

Has anyone suggested that you built the deck? Rather, some have rightfully claimed that it is NOT wrong to place different sides up. It's just a persistent myth among amateurs, with a "happy chap". You place, as mentioned, the nicest side up.

The person who built it chose the wrong screw. Not me. However, I replaced them with better screws.
