Hello,

renovating a house built in 1923. There is a masonry chimney that hasn't been used for a few years with (I think) 4 flues. In the attic, the plaster has fallen off and the bricks are exposed. If you poke at the mortar between the bricks, it's fairly easy to scrape away sand, but the structural integrity seems good. What should one do? Must it be dismantled and rebuilt or can new plaster be applied in the attic?

See pictures.

Thanks in advance!

  • Exposed brick chimney with missing plaster in an attic, showing wear and mortar erosion, with some bricks visible. Pipes and insulation in the surroundings.
  • Exposed brickwork on an old chimney with missing plaster in an attic, showing visible gaps and weathered mortar joints.
I had called the chimney sweep and asked them to come out and take a look, my chimney sweeps are very nice and provide good tips and advice in connection with sweeping or fire safety inspection, and I have found that very useful.

I can't imagine they charge particularly many hundreds of kronor for a little advice.
