Read a bit about creaking/cracking in stairs and various ways to try to minimize it. Wondering if this phenomenon generally also applies to new stairs? Ours creaks and snaps very loudly. Should one request the stair or house supplier to adjust the stairs?

  • Modern wooden staircase with metal railings in a home, potential source of creaking noises discussed in the forum thread about adjusting new staircases.
It might be the rule under the stair tread that is causing the sound, try loosening the screws a bit and maybe it will disappear.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try this.

Glue, that's the only thing that works. Loosen the screws on the steps just enough so that you can apply wood glue. Then tighten the screws firmly.

If the ladder is leaning against the wall, that's definitely where the squeak is coming from.

Loosened the screws on the studs a bit and imagine it got somewhat better but not completely good. So probably need to try gluing at some point.

Should I apply glue under the steps on the right near the wall or also on the left (viewed from the picture)?

The steps are against the wall. What is the solution in this case? Remove each step and sand?

What creaks is when wood rubs against wood. I wouldn't think it would have the same effect against the drywall. Glue everywhere you can reach… It's suggested that you unscrew all the steps from the stringer before gluing and then do all the steps at the same time. If you do it one step at a time, it will probably be difficult to get it right.
