Hello
I am considering renovating my (indoor) staircase where there are cracks along the entire wall (plaster) at the seam between the wall and the staircase (see pictures). I live in a house from the 1940s that was renovated about 15 years ago. I assume the cracking is due to movement and possibly the use of some unsuitable material. However, the previous owner was a carpenter, so maybe time has just done this.

I would therefore like some tips on how best to proceed when renovating. My thought is that perhaps a special sealant, paint, etc., is needed as I think there will be extra movement in a staircase. I'm considering scraping away everything that's cracked and then perhaps sealing and painting. I would gratefully receive tips on how best to proceed or if there are alternative methods.

  • Crack along the wall beside indoor wooden staircase, showing junction between wall and stairs.
  • Crack along an indoor staircase wall, showing separation between plaster and wood, potentially caused by movement or material choice.
