OK, but can't you just switch to something else then? MDF or laminated board or even HDF and paint it instead? It seems a bit of a shame to spend time and effort gluing the marble and then painting it.

I understand the point, but I honestly think it costs more time and money to go for wooden moldings instead.
 
Update:
I have glued the board with the glue I linked to in the thread and then painted over it twice. There is a small gray seam, but after 2 coats of paint, it's almost gone. Once the lacquer is in place, I don't think it will be visible.

The bench is still intact so far, but it hasn't been put to any major tests yet; I've just lifted and turned it a few times.

I'm considering whether to reinforce the repair in some way?
Maybe some thin metal that can be attached to the underside along the entire bench?
 
Why not just put a piece of wood there instead? I don't see the point of a painted stone... You can't tell it's marble anymore...
