Now it's time for the old staircase to be revamped. As you can see in the picture, it is very worn under the carpet, and they've filled the hollows with masonite.
The plan is for the staircase to be covered with panels and new stair nosing and then painted. I'm considering the choice of material. Thinking of milling new nosing in an old style in oak or pine (oak for durability). The question is what I should make the steps and risers from. The alternatives I've considered are MDF or some thin veneer flooring, like 8mm click flooring with wood veneer.
I've looked at step kits and the like but haven't found any with nice stair nosing, considering it's expensive if I'm going to paint everything anyway.
Any tips and experiences?
