Hello!

I have always loved cheat sheets and rules of thumb for quickly estimating things.

I thought we could perhaps try to gather a bunch together! Anything at all but preferably focusing on construction techniques, dimensioning of wooden frame, costs, placement of vapor barrier, amount of insulation, construction times, etc.

Feel free to share! :)

Sharing a basic rule of thumb!

SCREW
-Estimate needing about 35 screws per square meter (joist spacing 600 mm).
-The wider the plank, the fewer screws required.
-Denser joist spacing demands more screws.
-The screw should penetrate equally into both pieces being fastened together.
-Do not drive the screw head deeper than 1 mm below the surface of the board.

Screw Dimensions – Example

Timber Thickness Screw Length
22 mm 42 mm
28 mm 55 mm
34 mm 70 mm
45 mm 115 mm

Ø110mm drainage should have a slope of 10mm/m.

The budget always gets blown x 2

Right angle with a folding ruler. If, for example, you are going to build a patio or a small shed and need to cast foundations for it, stretch a string at an angle where the foundations will be. Measure 120 cm [a] with the folding ruler and place a tape to mark the length. Measure 160 cm and place a tape. Then measure the distance (c) between the tapes, which should be 200 cm, i.e., the entire length of the folding ruler. Adjust the ends of the string until the distance (c) is 200 cm. Then you know you have stretched the string at an exact right angle.

Getting help from family and friends does not always make things go faster...
