Hello everyone,
our old house in Kalmar County has a beautiful gate at the entrance. After 20 years and somewhat negligent maintenance in recent years, I have to consider buying a new one. I want the gate to match the style of the house from 1878.
match.
As you can see in the picture, it consists of two wings with the following dimensions:
1.5 m width X 1.25 m height. The thickness of the supporting parts is 45mm X 90mm, the distance between the hanging in the granite post is 82cm. The distance between the granite posts is 308 cm.
The ideal would be to use the old original steel fittings.

I have not yet managed to find a ready-made gate that fits these dimensions, but perhaps someone in this forum knows of a supplier.

If only a custom-made one is possible: which material is recommended for long durability?
recommended for durability?

Tropical wood is excluded, oak is expensive and quite heavy, Robinia is very heavy and probably not good to work with. Plastic? What is recommended here? What about pressure-treated softwood to be painted white?

Can anyone here recommend a manufacturer for a custom-made door?
recommend?

Many thanks in advance!

Hello everyone,
After a treatment with base oil and some paint, tor has a good chance of surviving the upcoming winter.
But does anyone here actually have any advice for a permanent solution?
Thanks for the help!
Günter

  • White wooden gate with spindle bars, set on a gravel path, surrounded by greenery and trees, freshly painted after an oil treatment.
Replace damaged parts and take better care of it in the future. It's worth taking care of. Try to get hold of high-quality timber (i.e., not from Bauhaus).
How old is it?

Thank you for the advice and for asking.
Of course, it would be nice to keep the gate in this design. How old
it is, I don't know, but it was here in 2000 and in a usable state.
After a few years, around 2007, I replaced the bearing parts with material from Snicker Jocke in Nybro. The part in the picture
served as a sample.
It was a lot of work, and I don't know if I can do it again.

That's why I'm looking for alternatives. But where can I find
high-quality wood?

If Snickarjocke in Nybro can't help you, check with other fine carpentries. There are a couple in the Staffanstorp area (I have no personal experience with these but have read about architects in the newspaper who hired Amarant for interior design projects). Expect the material cost to be sky-high even if you make the gate yourself, but you have the advantage of having an (apparently?) old original(?) gate as a starting point that is both special and beautiful. With the right material and maintenance, such a gate can last 100 years.

I recommend heart pine or oak if you are going to make a new gate, it should probably also be treated with linseed oil and painted with linseed oil if the lifespan is to be long.

It motivates me and gives me hope.
I will try Snicker Jocke again. But first, I will familiarize myself with the subject of virkeskvalitet.
And then hopefully present a new photo next year.
