Hello
We are currently building our house, and the staircase arrived the other day.
We hadn't really considered that there would be a gap between the closet wall and the stair railing (see picture). We are a bit undecided about whether to close the "gap" in some way so that the railing is in the wall itself instead. We are a bit unsure about what we want to do and mostly think it becomes a dead space that is hard to clean.
Tips and ideas are gratefully received.

I would probably make a filler piece that follows the same line as the slope of the stringer.martin7805 said:

We hadn't really thought about the gap between the closet wall and the stair railing (see picture). We're a bit undecided whether we should close the "gap" somehow so that the railing is attached to the wall instead. We're unsure how we want to proceed and mostly feel it's a dead space that doesn't serve any purpose other than being difficult to clean.
Any tips and ideas are greatly appreciated
It would be attached just below the level of the stringer.
Edit Then it's still cleanable. If the wall is built right against the railing, there will be a small gap that can't be cleaned.
Another option is to build the wall right up to the stringer and only have a handrail on the wall instead of a railing.
Make a narrow pull-out cabinet with/without shelves in it? Maybe a good place for umbrellas, keys, leashes, or other small things that are good to "tuck away". It also becomes a shelf on top where you can either place items or put a decoration/flower on...
It looks like you could fit shoes there too (they don't need to stand "next" to each other in the cabinet).
The "front" could be open like a narrow bookshelf for mobiles. Many ideas

Hi! I have a space under the stairs that's very similar to yours and also want to build storage there and am considering solutions. How did you end up doing it? Did the narrow empty space/gap remain or did you find a clever solution for it?martin7805 said:
