Our house has an extension with a crawl space (the rest of the house has a basement). The previous owner had a frozen pipe one winter and was forced to create an entry into the crawl space to fix the damage.

How can I best seal this hole to keep out the cold and unwanted "tenants"? My initial thought was a plywood board over it, but that won't keep out the cold. It is very cold in the extension compared to the rest of the house.

  • A hole in a textured wall leading to a crawl space opening, used to repair a frozen pipe.

Mortar and leca blocks do seal up, but it's good to be able to get in and inspect when needed, right?

Cut a piece of foam plastic and attach it with foam sealant, then attach a fiber cement board over the hole so no uninvited guests come in. That way, it only takes a few minutes for you to open it up again when needed.
