Hi! We have a house from '61 and it was drained in 2010 so now we're thinking of fixing up the basement a bit. On the walls, there has been beadboard from floor to ceiling and no signs of mold or other moisture. The paneling was probably installed in the 70s or 80s and it looked like new.
Now to the question...
If we put metal studs on the walls and then regular boards with a 3mm gap so it can ventilate, what do you think about that?
A friend did it in the relaxation room and then painted it with white paint and it turned out really nice, but it's not in a basement?

The important thing is to have nothing organic in direct contact with the outer wall. If you then install panels at a distance, make sure that air can pass behind from the bottom to the top edge, i.e., any spacer list should be vertical so that air can "flow" behind. If, as you wrote, you instead install boards with a 3 mm gap, it will provide sufficient ventilation even if the battens are horizontal.
