Chimney bricks?

I have a stack of bricks at the cottage.
I had planned to use some for renovating the upper part of the chimney.
But it's said there are regular bricks and chimney bricks.
How do I know what I have and what happens if I use regular bricks for the chimney?

Check page 85 in this brochure. It says a bit about the frost and density classes required for brick for a chimney. Maybe you can ask a mason to look at a brick and see if it's suitable?

Otherwise - isn't there any kludd you can apply to the bricks so that they repel water?
