Trying to tidy up the surfaces in a room but have encountered a problem. Due to the window placement, there is no space for both the ceiling moulding and the trim. The space between the window frame and the ceiling is about 120 mm. The ceiling moulding I plan to install is 82 mm high. The trim is about 100 mm.
Is the molding and the bottom edge of the trim the same height? I think it would look best to continue the ceiling molding around and have a narrow trim.
Test. Hold up the crown molding and window trim and see which you think feels best. Ask someone to help hold it so you can look.
We have a window with similar conditions in one of our houses. There, when the house was built, they installed window trim around the window and let the crown molding connect on either side. That means no crown molding directly above the window.
I thought I had a picture but unfortunately can't find one.
It's probably carved a bit in the crown molding to tidy up the transition to the trim, I guess, since that's how it's done in other parts of the house where moldings meet.
As said, see how it looks together. An idea could be that the crown molding goes all the way and the trim attaches to the part that overlaps the crown molding, then it becomes like a complete framing of the window. It might be necessary to sand/file the upper edge of the trim, so it aligns better with the crown molding, which usually has a bevel against the ceiling and wall.
There are a few different options, build a cornice that you connect the crown molding to. Install the casing first and notch out the crown molding for the casing, allowing it to pass outside the casing. Install the crown molding first and cut a casing that connects to the underside of the crown molding. There are more options if you google, and you can find images.
