Hello

This is how it looks in my house. Trim that ends against the ceiling molding in this way.
I don't think it looks very nice; is this common, or is there a more attractive solution?

  • Molding meeting ceiling trim, creating an unfinished look, with visible gaps and uneven paint.
  • Corner of a room showing ceiling molding and door trim junction, with a round vent below and visible paint imperfections.
Why is there even a lining there?

They are openings that remained after a wall was taken down.

  • Corner of a room showing structural openings where a wall was removed, with visible wall molding and thermostat.
  • Opening left after wall removal showing corner with molding and a mirror on adjacent wall.
Should go without lining what function does it serve are there large cracks underneath

So the wide board (what do you call it) in the middle is not plaster. So yes, I suppose it's a gap.
How would you have done it instead?

Remove the lining, plastered and painted.
