Hello!

From what I've read, it's common to cast footings in paper tubes, but I happen to have access to plastic tubes in a suitable size and wonder if these can be used to cast concrete?

Are there any disadvantages to casting in plastic tubes?
Anyone with experience?

Unnecessary expense (even if it's small) to buy paper tubes if plastic works just as well :)

go for it, works fine

The tube is just supposed to hold the concrete in place while casting. Paper tubes, plastic tubes work well. A hole without a tube works too.

Okay great, I'll go with that, thanks for the reply!

about 200mm, why? Does the diameter affect anything?

Yes, what size you get on your plinths.

The reason I'm asking is because I've done the same with casting, I had a couple of meters of 200 lying around, cut them and greased them inside with regular cooking oil and casted. Once it had set so they were a bit firm, I twisted them a couple of centimeters with a sharp motion, then I could slowly twist them upwards, leaving the plinth in place and I cast the next one with the same tube, they were cleaned plus more cooking oil. You can drive a few rods into the ground that stick up as support so they don't tilt sideways. The 200 is good because there is surface area to place the bearer beams on and a bit of tar paper on top before.
