Carrying off load-bearing brick wall
We were planning to replace a window with a new exterior door and would like a double door. The problem is that the window is 130cm wide, which is too narrow, so we want to widen the opening.
I started to chip away the plaster and found a concrete beam, or actually two that are about 3cm wide/deep with a joint between them of about 3cm.
The house is 1.5 stories and this part of the house was built in '45. Would it be possible to prop along the outer wall and then replace the existing concrete beam with a wider one? (or a steel beam)
We'll probably have someone calculate it, but I'm interested in the workflow and possibly doing the intervention myself.
The next question is how wide should a double door be to comfortably pass through? Is a 15 wide door enough or does it feel too narrow?

Well, that's probably how it will be, it affects how big the indent will be.BirgitS said:

I think the wall needs to be temporarily supported against loads from the roof trusses/intermediate floor during the intervention. The bricks above are likely to stay in place for the short time, so I'm not worried about that.BirgitS said:
