Hi,

I need your help. I'm currently renovating one of the bedrooms and installing drywall, but when I got to the wall that is against the outer wall, I can't find any studs. The house is from '81 with a wooden facade.

The interior wall has a layer of drywall, then some harder foam, and then insulation. I've tried screwing all the way from one corner to the window and only found two studs, one about 5 cm from the window and one stud in the corner. Between the corner and the window, it's about 133 cm, and between the stud in the corner and the stud by the window, it's about 125 cm. But no stud between these. I've tried screwing all the way between the window and corner without finding any stud.

The walls I've screwed which are interior walls have been on 60 cm centers, and I could mount 120 cm boards without problem there.

Do you have any tips? Why can't I find any studs in the outer wall with 60 cm or 45 cm centers?

  • Room interior being renovated, showing a partially stripped wall with a window and radiator, ladder with drill, and tools on the floor.
  • Close-up view of a wall revealing layers of plasterboard, foam insulation, and gypsum, highlighting a renovation query about missing studs.
  • Close-up of an interior wall showing exposed insulation next to a window frame, with partially removed wallpaper revealing the wall structure.
  • Damaged wallpaper on a wall with measurements and "Regel" marked, indicating difficulty in finding studs during renovation.
  • Close-up view of an exposed wall section showing layers of drywall, foam, and insulation, highlighting the absence of expected wooden studs.
The joints on the panels should be visible down by the floor or up by the ceiling.

have checked and found where the boards have been joined but when I test screw there, the screw doesn't hold. The screw is 41 mm long and holds if I test screw in the corner or by the window.

if it is a house made in a factory, it could be pre-made wall sections that have been assembled, and then some of them had both vertical and horizontal studs in the wall sections

I guess you have to search with a stud finder to locate the studs in this case? I made a small hole in the drywall seam and it's completely hollow right there.

Neodymium magnets are awesome. Easily find all the drywall screws with these.
