Can you tell if it is tempered or non-tempered glass?

If it is a new and modern window, you can look along the metal frame in the glass package of the window. There are usually some details stamped there.

On our windows with Pilkington glass, it says HARTOWANE, which is said to mean HÄRDAT in Polish.

If there is no stamp on the glass, it is difficult to know if it is tempered. The guys at work (glaziery) usually tap on the glass to hear if it is tempered, but even they sometimes fail.

The purchase price is probably a good way to check it - tempered glass is many times more expensive than untempered.

...so the color doesn't indicate whether it's tempered or not. Tricky to rely on that. Same with polished edges: You can polish edges on non-tempered glass.

If you break the glass, there will be very many small pieces if the glass was tempered; otherwise, there will be large sharp shards. THEN you know. But then it's too late. :S
