Hello

I am currently building a house that is quite sleek and minimalistic. No frills. I am avoiding crown molding as much as possible. So far, I haven’t used any in the rooms I’ve completed (living room and bathroom), but now I am moving on to the laundry room and sunroom, where the ceiling and walls don't come together very nicely.

I will be buying molding at Byggmax tomorrow and overall I think it could look quite nice to use baseboard (presumably upside down) against the ceiling.

Do people do that sometimes or is it really weird?

The alternative is to buy a traditional crown molding, which "looks kind of 45-degree," but in my opinion, they are both harder to miter and not as suitable in this case. :)

I need to cover approximately 10mm from the wall and about 40mm down on the wall to make sure I cover what the painter has left. So I was thinking of buying something like 12x43mm baseboard.

Thanks for your thoughts!

There is a risk that at least I would wonder "what the h*ck you did". :)

But most of the time I feel quite alone in noticing such things. ;)

The question has been asked before on the forum, and the answer was then (if I remember correctly) do as you like, it's your house. I know an architect who talked about using rundstav as a ceiling moulding. "For the exciting shadows one could achieve"

I have (after a customer's request, not on my own initiative!) installed an upside-down socket in a few places. Looks completely crazy imo.

But I think 99.9% of the world's population wouldn't have noticed.

It can work depending on the molding. My in-laws have in their large villa installed what I believe is a dado rail or some form of skirting board to create an edge at the top to be able to attach such metal clips that you fasten a line/wire to in order to hang pictures without screwing into the walls. I was skeptical when I heard it but it worked well.

Why be so anxious about what others think? Attach a baseboard and give it some thought. If you think it looks good, then just go for it! :)

But do what you think looks best, if it looks completely wrong, you can break it off and install traditional moldings.

I did the opposite in the workshop, took the most elaborate baseboard and paired it with the most elaborate crown molding I could find. It took forever to craft the corners, but it’s done now.

It goes perfectly well.
Go ahead.
If you're not satisfied when everything is painted and finished, you can "just" take it down and change it. :p

"Can I use baseboard as a crown molding, or am I weird?"
To A I reply: Why not, is there any obstacle?
To B I reply: Maybe, is it a problem?

Great that it turned out as you wished!
P.S. I think the world benefits from having a certain amount of slightly eccentric people...

I thought it looked fantastic with the 43mm skirting board on the ceiling. Just as I had imagined. Minimal and anonymous, just the way I want it.

Looked good in my eyes at least :)

Perfect! What more could you ask for?
I think it looks quite okay according to the picture.
For my part, I appreciate people who think for themselves, and if necessary, ignore the simple, safe, and secure but oh-so-dull 'mainstream track.'
