Hello,

I'm going to build a garden shed that is 5 meters long and 3 meters wide.
The question now is how big the glulam beam or Kerto beam should be.

What is best to use, Kerto or glulam?
What is more expensive?

There will be a ridge beam/bearing line going from one side to the other.
The roof beam itself will be 1200mm apart.

This is what I found here: http://www.iat.inadire.se/WebLagerbalk/Lagerbalk.aspx

Ridge Beam

LT 66x315 17 mm (L/300) 40 mm 7.6 kN 49 kg
LT 90x270 20 mm (L/256) 40 mm 7.6 kN 57 kg
LT 115x270 16 mm (L/322) 40 mm 7.7 kN 73 kg
LT 140x225 22 mm (L/227) 40 mm 7.7 kN 74 kg

KERTO-S 45x360 15 mm (L/328) 47 mm 7.5 kN 38 kg
KERTO-S 51x400 10 mm (L/505) 42 mm 7.6 kN 48 kg
KERTO-S 63x300 19 mm (L/264) 40 mm 7.5 kN 44 kg
KERTO-S 75x600 2 mm (L/2372) 40 mm 7.9 kN 106 kg

------------------------------
Roof Beam

LT 42x180 2 mm (L/827) 40 mm 3.7 kN 9 kg
LT 56x225 1 mm (L/2123) 40 mm 3.8 kN 15 kg
LT 66x315 0 mm 40 mm 3.8 kN 25 kg
LT 90x180 1 mm (L/1729) 40 mm 3.8 kN 19 kg
LT 115x180 1 mm (L/2180) 40 mm 3.8 kN 25 kg
LT 140x225 0 mm 40 mm 3.9 kN 38 kg

KERTO-S 45x200 2 mm (L/1285) 40 mm 3.7 kN 11 kg
KERTO-S 51x400 0 mm 40 mm 3.8 kN 24 kg
KERTO-S 63x300 0 mm 40 mm 3.8 kN 23 kg
KERTO-S 75x600 0 mm 40 mm 4.0 kN 54 kg

So what would you choose?

/M

I would choose the 90X270 beam as I think it is the easiest to work with.

I would build the rafters with regular wood instead of glulam, assuming it will be much cheaper.

When I shopped six years ago, KERTO was more expensive for the same load-bearing capacity. KERTO is a dream to work with on the other hand - because it weighs so little.

Take care

if the beam is going to be visible, I would choose the glulam.
even though kerton is cheaper.
