The start of construction for my balcony/patio is approaching. I need help verifying my dimensions. Is there anyone kind enough to assist me?
I'm planning to use 28x120 decking boards. There will be no roof, and it will be open underneath so that water can drain straight through. I'm thinking it should be 480cm wide and 260cm deep. It will be at a height of about 260 cm above the ground. It will stand with posts on bedrock. I plan to dimension as follows: Support beams 45x195mm in front, screwed into the house wall and on posts at the ends. Floor joists at 45x170 with a spacing of 60 cm. The front support beam will be supported by 3 or 4 (?) posts, either glued laminated timber 115x115 or self-made posts of 3x 120x45mm screwed together.
I hope this is understandable without a drawing as I haven't managed to create one digitally.
The material list will be:
45x195mm support beam
45x170mm floor joists
28x120mm decking boards
115x115mm posts or 120x135mm

Yes, choose glulam for the posts, it will probably look best if the posts are made in one piece as they can usually get a bit cracked. Yes, 95 should work, but they can become a bit shaky when they are 2.6m long.
The balcony can accommodate about 15 people, imagine the kids have a party when you're away and everyone is jumping in time to the music. Also, consider that everyone might throw themselves against the railing.

I was planning to use glulam posts because, as Krillew says, the solid ones tend to crack. I also felt that 95x95 might look a bit flimsy, so I'm mostly considering 115x115. Any opinions on the span and dimensions? I can go up to 220 at the front edge of the balcony, but the distance between the windows on the lower floor and the balcony door means that I can't fit more than 195mm attached to the wall.
