The kitchen in our vacation home has a bit of a space issue, and to get a little more room, we're considering a 37cm deep tall cabinet next to the fireplace. I assume there might be some rules about placing a tall cabinet next to the fireplace, even if it's not used often. In the future, I would like to have an insert in it.

The space where the fire is lit ends at the same height where the tall cabinet will begin, if you know what I mean. Should one in some way insulate between the cabinet and the fireplace? Or is the idea of a tall cabinet there just something to scrap?

Sure thing, I also took some pictures of it..
A red brick fireplace with various candles on the mantel. A fire extinguisher is mounted on a white wooden wall next to it. Red brick fireplace with decorative candles on the mantel and a white fire extinguisher mounted on a wooden-paneled wall beside it.

Firebrick also seems to be missing inside the fireplace too.

According to the chimney sweep, it should be okay since it is built with "1 1/2 standing stone backwards" if I remember the quote correctly. It was recently swept, so I assume it is okay.

We have something like this in the countryside too. The difference is that we have an open fireplace, then an inner wall, and then a cupboard.

If you keep the fire going in the fireplace all weekend, it might be just over 30 degrees in the cupboard by Sunday.

Talked to the chimney sweep today, we had a bit of trouble understanding each other at first but then it cleared up. If I understood him correctly, there's no problem having furniture next to the open fireplace as long as there are a few centimeters of air to carry away the heat.
