Hello,

We are in the process of renovating the hallway, and there we have a descent to the basement that looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/prD0FsQ.jpg

It's about 4.5 meters from the basement floor to the ceiling at the highest point, so we probably need to build some kind of temporary scaffolding over the stairs.

How would you do it?

My own thought is 3-4 really thick beams placed across the stairs, i.e., from the first step to where the bathroom door is on the entrance level, and then lay some type of boards on top here. The important thing is to leave a wide margin along the wall so that you can get gypsum boards and wallpaper down there. Otherwise, it will likely need to fill up more or less the entire width, so we'll have to go the garage way if we want to get down to the basement for a while. If this is the right way to go, what dimensions should we choose for the beams and boards? We will need to stand with a ladder.

Do nothing else to choose, but 3 pieces should be enough, it's only 3 meters, so place 45x95 on edge and put some screws in the plate to keep them from tipping over, against the studs. A regular 13 mm plywood board cut to the right dimensions will suffice, strong enough to almost drive a car on.
